TERR-AQUA ENVIRO SYSTEMS UV-OXIDATION AIR POLLUTION CONTROL SYSTEMS PROCESS ADVANTAGES AND FLOW DIAGRAM

The Terr-Aqua Enviro Systems' (TAES) Ultraviolet Light-Activated Oxygen/Ozone (UV-Oxidation) Treatment System offers numerous advantages over other activated carbon adsorption/regeneration systems, and particularly over afterburner systems, for Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emission control.

1.    High reliability due to the use of dual-redundant adsorption chambers, one of which is always active while the other is being regenerated, makes the system inherently reliable  Even in the event of an extremely unusual failure of the regeneration system, each adsorption unit is capable of capturing and continuing a minimum of three days VOC production at maximum anticipated volume.  This approximately six day safety factor allows for continued operation without difficulty during both planned and unexpected maintenance activities.

2.    Minimum personnel exposure to potentially hazardous materials results from the self-contained automated nature of the regenerative process.  Each time the system cycles a chamber to the regeneration mode, the VOC collected by the activated carbon is neutralized and expelled.  There is no requirement for ever handling contaminated materials.

3.    The long life of activated carbon is an additional bonus of the TAES system; five years or more.  The UV-Oxidation based regenerative process has a minor impact on the quality of the specific activated carbon used, compared to the steam based processes which degrade the carbon material on each cycle.

4.    No hazardous waste material disposal and no toxic by-products are associated with the normal operation of the TAES systems.  Even when the activated carbon must be replaced, the used material will be clean, uncontaminated carbon particles.  Standard regeneration systems result in contaminated water disposal problems or require secondary treatment steps, such as distillation or incineration.  These processes can represent further environmental risks and added operating expenses.

5.    Minimal regular maintenance is required for the TAES systems as the equipment is all electrically powered and is, in effect, self-cleaning due to the UV-Oxidation regeneration process.  Only the particulate pre-filter in the gathering duct, the UV-Oxidation input air filter and the final water filter require inspection and replacement.  Occasional UV lamp cleaning and replacements are required, which is a simple matter similar to servicing an enclosed fluorescent lighting fixture.

6.    The TAES system requires no heat, steam or fuel.  The operating, maintenance, repair and replacement costs associated with high temperature burners and steam boilers are completely eliminated.  Hot exhaust gas associated problems are also avoided, including NOX emissions.

7.    Installation of the prefabricated TAES modules requires tie-in of 480 volt 3-phase electrical power to the system and blower with interconnection of the components by ducting, after placement and tie-down.  The flexibility in system design makes placement in the available space possible.

8.    The use of stainless steel and chemically inert polymer plastics, etc., assures a long life for the TAES systems under normal operating conditions.

9.    The system is simple to operate and requires no special or unusual skills.  Terr-Aqua Enviro Systems offers a short training and familiarization program as part of the installation and testing effort.  Any reasonably skilled plant maintenance person will be readily trained to operate and maintain the equipment with the training program.

In summary, the TAES UV-Oxidation Treatment System's many design and operation advantages include:

  • Cost effective elimination of VOC
  • Uncomplicated maintenance
  • Simple operation
  • Low long-term operating costs
  • Safe and clean operation
  • System design to meet space requirements
  • One step regeneration cycle
  • No toxic by-products
  • No secondary hazardous waste materials
  • Legal discharge to sewer, if required
